Frequently Asked Questions

The C Clean System

Q: What is the C Clean system designed for?
A: The C Clean system has been specifically designed to remediate water bodies which have high nutrient levels / loading.

Q: How much water can the C Clean system process per day?
A: The land based system can process up to 500,000 litres and the floating system up to 3,000,000 litres.

Q: What is the largest volume of water the C Clean can treat?
A: Up to 1000 sq km.

Q: How is the equipment maintained and serviced?
A: Technicians are required to maintain, monitor, service, re-fuel, water test and cleand the equipment.

Q: How much energy is required to power the system?
A:

Q: What is the difference between the C Clean and other treatment processes on the market?
A: The traditional treatment processes on the market use chemical or additives to achieve a reduction in a specific nutrient. The C Clean uses no chemicals. It works on natural water cycles with a combination of ozone, UV and biological filtration.

The C Box

Q: Over the grow out period - how many fish are you expected to loose?
A: This will vary enormously with species type, but using Barramundi we recommend starting with 10% more than required and this seems to be more than enough.

Q: What is the average weight of the fish after the grow out period?
A: Fish go from fingerlings (-50mm) to 500g in around 4 months.

Q: What method do you use to transfer fish between a 7 system during grow out?
A: At present we use enivro-nets but are developing a passive fish harvester/grader which uses water flow to move and grade fish.

Q :What method is used to prepare the fish for market?
A: Determined by markets i.e. live fish / whole fish / fillets.

Q: What is the average temperature of the water in the box?
A: This is species dependent - the ideal temperature for Barramundi is 28 degrees celcius.

Q: What is the power requirement for 1 / 3 / 7 boxes?
A: Operational boxes uses 2 - 4 KW per hour of power.

Q: How much water is required for each box? How much water can be lost over time?
A: The system holds 5,500 litres, and in a 7 box system we are getting 100 litres waste water per day, most of which is decanted back into the system, leaving the solid waste which is kept and used as fertiliser.

Q: Why was the C Box technology developed?
A: In early 1997 the founder of Cumminscorp, Ian Cummins, reserached the problems associated with the worldwide aquaculture industry, and discovered that it was primarily the environmental issues which posed the greatest threat to both the sustainability of the industry and the environment itself. Ian was convinced that safer, more practical processes could be implemented in the growing of aquatic species.

Q: What is different about the C Box technology?
A: Inlike similar systems developed elsewhere, it has a simple and efficient filtration system and is completely portable. This was a design consideration in the initial stages, which allowed for the modular units to be completely transportable on either the back of a truck, shipping containers or just about anywhere in the world.

Q: How many fish can I expect to produce using the C Box?
A: Species / size dependent, but can grow up to 1 tonne of aquatic animals.

Q: What other costs will I need to consider if I become a C Box owner?
A: Land, water, power, feed, accessories (test kits, nets, etc), labour, harvest and transport costs.

Q: How much labour is involved when using the C Box system for aquaculture?
A: General running is approximately 2 hours per box per day.

Q: How do I learn to monitor water quality and know what to feed the fish?
A: We supply an informative operations manual and provide thorough training and backup.

Q: What is the tank made of?
A: Foam filled polyethylene (recyclable).

Q: Are the C Boxes specific for one use only i.e. fish farms?
A: Whilst the water filtration technology has been proven by the company, it is evident the technology will have global implications once independent testing has been successfully completed at the Queensland's Department of Primary Industry' Reseach Centre.
